Letters from the Civil War

Today I wrote my first letter from the Doctor character serving in the American Civil War,(Union Army - that's the north folks, Blue Uniforms.) for inclusion in my book.

He is tending to the wounded after the battle of Bull Run 21st July 1861. 25 miles from Washington DC.

To add to my understanding of the period in American History I have been watching the Documentary series on 'The Civil War' (which I collected from the library) and doing quite a bit of reading reading: real books and on the internet.

The internet is a great resource for researching as you go along.

I was discussing with my mother the horror of wealthy citizens taking picnis and champagne in carriages to view the battle. She reminded me that this had occurred in many other conflicts.

I replied now, of course, we are so much more civilized; an army can be hundreds of thousands of miles away eating pizza and drinking fizz and simply push a button to launch bombs and rockets and so forth to wipe out an enemy.

Yes, so much more civilized.

Interesting about the civil war. I too am working on a civil war story but from some female members of my family who apparently killed a Yankee soldier who wandered onto the property. He was wounded and probably not in the best of health but I don't know for sure if they killed him or not. My grandmother was doing one of those confessing everything in her life and then some when she was close to dying - kind of making her peace and all - but she was interrupted when she freaked me out (I think I was either pregnant at the time or my son was like 10 months old, can't remember) and I told her we had to go - so she stopped - I inquired it of my mother when we left and she said that apparently my grandmother's mother or some other women in the home had killed the soldier and buried him in he yard since there were no men around (it occurred during Sherman's march through the Carolinas). -- anyway - seems there are quite a few writing some civil war stories now - E :)
